On Saturday our friends Chris, Joyce and Lynne visited for lunch. My Chris made a summer pudding and for a change it decided to be a summer day, most of the time.
The after-lunch walk was to the devastated area above the station. Work was underway, but the extent of the damage still clearly visible. Below (looking east down towards the railway) one can see the rather narrow and ancient character of the channel intended to move thousands of litres of water per hour into the Roch.
Though on Saturday this trickle seemed insignificant. Near this point, further up the road and looking west, it appeared that around three water courses converged.
Further up the road, but still looking east down the road, Transco have started putting in a new gas main along a new line separate from the culvert (the emergency relief gas main is on the road to the right).
We talked to some of the residents - others did not want to talk and resented 'visitors' taking photographs. There seems to be a lot of local politics going on, upon which I am not qualified to comment. Residents have been very differently devastated by this deluge and for some this is the second and even the third time it has happened.
We know two people who live on this upper most part of the affected road. I'm being non-specific because the road changes its name at various points.
Back to the bottom of the road which is one of the west-side access routes to the station (but we are still looking up the road and away from the station).
In all events, the railway is open again. Indeed it was repaired very speedily. Well, Northern Rail were loosing money.
