Only a week late with this! Last Saturday I attended one of the IET Growing Courses that I had helped to organise - not very well in this case, having told people the wrong start time and at the end forgotten to hand out the feedback forms and the left the first aid box in Ferney Lee school 'lab'. The lab was very cold; it snowed briefly that morning. Clifford Cain the tutor was very late due to being first arrival at an M62 RTI on the way from Doncaster. So you know a typical start for your average course.
However, Clifford was on top form. He is a commercial fruit grower who tutors amateurs too, on RHS Harlow Carr courses for example at £45 a each. Our three hour course was free. We learnt a lot. I took copious notes. Above Clifford is pruning a rather weak apple back to the intended pyramid form it had been originally pruned to.
Above we identifying an apple tree's fruiting buds and noting evidence of canker.
We discuss what to do with this large tree. Clifford favours a light reparation for now and more treatment next season.
By this stage we are very cold and nearly ready to go home!
