Yesterday we left Arles with the intention of heading towards Millau and taking a couple of days. But first we wanted to check out the aire in Arles by the river. However the route sat nav wanted to go was closed due to Saturday market. We gave up finding an alternative and set off in the direction of Nîmes, with the intention of staying at the aire in St. Jean du Gard. It also is one of the termini of a steam railway, so that would be a bonus.
This day, which hadn't got off to a good start, now went rapidly worse. St. Jean du Gard was hosting a fête for kit car enthusiasts, so what should have been space for camping cars was stuffed full of car stuff and the kind of male youth that enjoys it. I decided to leave and head for Le Vigan. We were now deep in the Cévennes and its Causses. If you don't know the region it is high mountains, plunging gorges, massive, fast rivers and very, very steep winding roads. Looking at the natural landscape would have been fine if I were not the driver.
At last we did arrive in Le Vigan. Next shock was that sat nav directed me to go over that bridge below via a hair-pin bend. I declined and took the 'camping' road sign at the next roundabout. The campsite was deserted, but we thought we'll stay anyway until I noticed reception, which wasn't actually on the camp site. They were so helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the lovely evening light.Refreshed to set off on the next part of this journey through the Cévennes.
