Avignon Deux

We had to visit the Palace of the Popes. The restoration is fab but it's still grim from its century of being a prison and then a barracks - also of having fallen into disrepair after the papacy returned to Rome.

The Treasury had particularly splendid vaulting. It's in the foundations of the whole palace - there was much loot to stash.

Once, the palace was tiled with these lovely examples of Mediterranean tiles.

Chris is walking through the main chapel of the palace.

This stair case leads into the chapel for grand ceremonial entrances by the ecclesiastics.

Today les grandes legumes of regional politicians have to make do with the Palais du Congré. Domage.

After that treat we were walking aimlessly, because we didn't know where exiting through the shop had placed us, when I spotted a descendant of Louise, our dear old cat, outside Café Lou-Lou - no kidding.

Chris bought some Jacquard tea towels. I guess they might be given away.
We did buy a combined palace and bridge ticket so we know all about the history of the bridge now and can sing the song.
