This week Mick Blowers has been decorating our downstairs living room. It's the room that the previous owners created out of the space that was originally the integral garage. They, or perhaps the estate agents, called it the 'Garden Room', though at the time it looked out onto the tarmac drive that led to it. We have since had the tarmac removed and the garden landscaped but we have been unable to bring ourselves to refer to it as the garden room. The piano is there and most of the walls are lined with books, so we've tried 'piano room' and 'library' but they sound either unreal or pretentious. Upstairs we have a small room with a desk and shelving for domestic admin files, we call this 'the office'. We've finally decided that the downstairs living room should be 'the study'.

The study used to be green. As the main window and door to the garden faces North West we decided we wanted a warm but light colour, but our choice of Farrow and Ball Archive for the walls (a pinky, buffy, colour) seemed a little peely wally * so we chose Picture Gallery Red for the end wall. These photos were taken on Friday afternoon when we were beginning to put everything back in place. (Chris)
* This is a term John uses to mean 'weak', 'insipid', 'washed out', etc. I assumed it was a Lancashire expression but he says it's Glaswegian.
