St Hilaire sous Romilly sounded like a nice place according to the write up in the ACSI book so the next day we headed there.
It was a weird places though. Most of the enormous site was taken up with static caravans or cabins, many with awnings attached, garden furniture, mock fountains. Some were quite smart, other tatty. Maybe it was the time of year and not many people being around but it had the feel of a shanty ghost town. Facilities were definitely worse for wear but were scrupulously clean.
The only 'fresh' water we could find was supplied through an ordinary garden hose at the motorhome service point - and the least said about that, the better. Fortunately we didn't need water or the dumping point. As is often the case in France the reception was closed when we arrived. We wandered round looking for somewhere and fortunately found another English couple who had arrived late the night before having been held up at Calais. They showed us another part of the site across the road where there were some motorhome / caravan pitches. For some reason that I'm really curious about they were going to spend a week there before heading down to Spain for the winter. Maybe they had booked in advance?
Or perhaps they were into fishing? The campsite was strung out around a small lake (small compared with the previous two) and we did have quite a pleasant walk around it.
We'd stopped at a boulangerie on the way to the site so we shared some pastries for 'afternoon tea'.
