Our first night in France was spent in a car park at Calais where it rained all night. In the morning as we headed out of Calais to our friends Kate and Robert in Cartigny (near Péronne) we drove through torrential rain into quite a nice afternoon. Their house is above photo and the holiday let is on the left. Nice renovation job Robert and very comfortable Kate: garden still in progress.
We were heading towards Nancy and as one of France's '100 most beautiful detour' towns is en route we stopped the night in Bar le Duc. Now it was our intention to camp at the municipal which its website claimed was open. It was closed. Quick change of plan and we're pitched up at the aire, which filled up by late afternoon. The aire was between a mosquito-ridden canal and the main line to Strasbourg. It was restful listening to the expresses and freights thundering or rumbling through the long watches of the night. We did not visit the old town up the very steep hill, but confined ourselves to the exciting early evening liveliness of the 'new town'.
