Metz

Metz, on the Moselle, is not far from Nancy. We pitched free overnight next to the shut municipal camping on an aire. In the afternoon we had traipsed round the city. First the covered market where provender was bought from delighted shop-keepers. Ez would love the lobsters.
The cathedral is stunningly tall and elegant in a beautiful cream limestone, as are most of the public buildings in the city - but wait till the end of the photo-shoot.

The 'south' door entrance has a smiling BVM.
One can guess some idea of the height from the above view of the nave. There is of course exceptional medieval stained glass, but then a surprising row of windows by Chagall. All most impressive.
I wanted to view the gare SNCF, so we walked that way through the more classical architecture of the commercial district. Then, lo, upon a sudden the massive bulk of the general post office. It is the biggest city post office I've ever seen. I was puzzled then realised this must be the architecture of the German occupation of Alsace-Lorraine. It's not even in limestone. And nor is the gare SNCF.But it is fun in an over-the-top way rather like GWR, don't you think? The detailing is splendidly imperial German ridiculous.
