We arrived half an hour early for the ceremony of the last post at the Menin Gate. Already the crowds were gathering. These coach loads were from England. Many were school-aged children.
Very noisy and difficult to see what's going on. But the atmosphere changed as an RAF band arrived.
The playing of the last post was carried out as usual by buglers from Ypres firefighting service - at the river end of the gate, that is furthest away from us. Then several parties laid their remembrance wreaths. All of this was in total silence by the crowd.
The RAF band left, playing lustily.
Afterwards, wreath-layers were photographed with the buglers. For instance, here boys in splendid blazers can be seen with the firefighters. I guess they were remembering old boys of their school lost in the Great War here in Ypres. In my old school we had a remembrance plaque too and think the headmaster would say something appropriate on 11 November.
