Our newly cleaned Hymer was pitched up on Monday 13 May beneath the BBC's massively tall and powerful transmission mast. We have wonderful Radio4 reception now. The Caravan Club's site is next to the park of the Crystal Palace, burnt down in 1934 after being carted from Hyde Park and stuck on this hill. Odd I thought that
Crystal Palace which started as a satirical name in Punch for Paxton's glass and cast iron magnificent structure for The Great Exhibition of 1852 should be moved to a hill between Anerley and Sydenham which soon gained the name 'Crystal Palace'; and is now an actual London place name in its own right. What's more there isn't even a glass house on the site now.
It was quite a journey to Crystal Palace involving driving the van through east London, Docklands, the dreaded Blackwall Tunnel (nothing to it) and then the stop-start horrors of south London.
The point of all this was to deliver Chris into the capable hands of the wonderful eye surgical team of Ms Hollick at King's College, Camberwell ... on 14 May.
