This morning we took a taxi to the day surgery unit at King's College hospital on Denmark Hill in Camberwell. Chris was taken into medical custody at about 1 p.m. and I came back to the campsite on the 68 & 3 buses. After a boringly anxious afternoon I retraced that journey in half the time and was at the hospital by 4.30. Chris was finally discharged into my custody at 7 p.m. replete with drugs and eye-patch. We returned by taxi. The taxis round here seem to be driven by east Europeans in sharp suits.
All this time it's pouring with rain in south London.
The doctors think the operation went very well, but Chris has been reminded that she will not be able to see clearly until the bubble which holds the new endothelial layer in place has dispersed over the next week or so.
Christine is back at home in the van this evening. She has to lie on her back for much of the time over the next few days in order to help the bubble do its job of holding the graft in place.
Tomorrow the dressing will come off and the drug regime begins. There will be a consultation in the afternoon at the hospital.
