We Meet Phil Lomax

Phil Lomax of Myerscough College, near Preston, is in charge of the admin. for the training leading to a nationally recognised qualification offered to apprentices in agriculture and horticulture.

We are looking to employ 3 apprentices on the aquaponics project at Tod High which is Lottery funded up to £500k. When the polytunnel project starts in Walsden we will seek funding grants for further apprentices. Myerscough can supervise and train on site. A qualification should result for each apprentice. There is government support (still) for some qualifying young people.

This is very encouraging to us at a rather low time in IET, in some respects.

It was jolly interesting to learn that most of Myerscough's apprentices on this scheme are training to cut grass on golf courses, or plant out formal par terres for parks departments. Not one single fruit or vegetable production apprentice in this region.
