More of November

Our friends Jan & Jan have recently bought a motorhome so of course we wanted see it.  On 2nd Nov we set out to visit them at their home 'on the tops'.  It was a lovely day and we decided to go 'the quick way' rising steeply on narrow, sometimes single track, roads that can mean the nuisance of backing up if something comes the other way.  We had no problems with that but we eventually came to a queue of cars waiting while a huge truck unloaded the parts of a wind turbine that someone was having installed in their field.  We were there half an hour so it wasn't so quick after all.  It was though the nicest traffic jam I've ever been in.

There was plenty of time to get out, stretch legs, talk to other drivers and try (not very successfully) to photograph the band of mist that was hanging in the valley in the distance.

By the time we reached J & J's the fog that had risen up the valley to meet them.   Their motorhome was great and they're going to have fun travelling in it.

John has already posted about the wall that had partly fallen down due to the pressure of bamboo behind it.  We found a builder, Gary, who agreed to do it and above shows the job just before the coping stones were replaced.

A snap of late Autumn colours in the garden.

Sophie-Anna and I went shopping in Manchester on 11th Nov.  Here we are sitting outside Starbucks at Manchester Victoria station waiting for the train home.  At this point (about 3 p.m.) we didn't know how long the wait would be.  The train was due at 3.26 but was initially delayed for over an hour before we were told it was cancelled due to a train on fire at Smithy Bridge.   Trains on our line were  running as far as Rochdale and then there was a bus replacement.  Knowing the kind of circuitous route  replacement buses take we arranged with John to pick us up at Rochdale.  By the time he arrived we were chatting to two other passengers, Anna and Liam.  We gave them a lift to Halifax after dropping off Sophie-Anna in Sowerby Bridge.  We came back via the Calder Valley and were passing through Hebden Bridge at about 7 p.m, the time I was due there at my art class!  Needless to say I missed art that Weds but as compensation we stopped off for a Pizza in Tod.

A couple of days later we were at Sophie-Anna's 18th birthday celebration at the Maypole pub restaurant.  Above are Mark, me and S-A.  Below is Ez with another ice kebab.

On Sunday 15th we did a soggy walk along the canal.  It was definitely welly weather. In the photo above water was bursting up and displacing the inspection cover on the tow path.

Here, above and below, it is difficult to distinguish between the tow path and canal.

We left the canal path to join the main road as we wanted to see how high the river was.  The river Roch is culverted in many places, most famously under Tod town hall.  Here it is shown disappearing under a house in Walsden.

Last Sunday, 22nd, we decided be a bit more adventurous and drive to Hardcastle Crags for our walk.  Lynne and I took off at a normal walking pace and left John behind to try out his new camera filter gear.

Meanwhile I just snapped away on my little pocket camera

The greenery in the photo above is next year's bluebells.

After an hour or so Lynne and I reached the café at Gibson Mill and had coffee and cakes.  On leaving we met John just arriving so we all walked back together along the metalled road route.  At the car park John set up his camera again as the sun, which had been eluding him, came out briefly.  By then my camera battery had given up so the photo below is by iPhone.
