Dulwich Picture Gallery and Kings

Chris's wonderful friend Kathy came all the way from the banks of the Medway even unto Abbey Wood so she could escort her dear friend to Kings Hospital hard in vehicle-choked Camberwell. Now this was a great trial for she had left David to mind the house, the electricity having failed grievously. Men had been summoned, but arrived not upon their hour. This was an anxious day of very slow driving, hurried telephone communications, fine dining and looking at more pictures.

So we arrived late in the morning at Dulwich Picture Gallery on our second visit. This time to view the Whistler exhibition. We learnt of Whistler's great legal fight with John Ruskin over a pot of pain thrown at the public by an American fraud.
Lunch was a long wait, then eaten in a cold restaurant. However I think we enjoyed the meal well enough.

We saw a series of etchings of London docklands and a few of Whistler's paintings including the notorious Nocturne of Old Battersea Bridge with Fireworks that so incensed Ruskin. He saw where modernism in art would lead.

It was necessary to leave by 3.30 to travel the 1.1 miles to Kings for the 4.15 appointment with Chris's eye surgeon.

All is well with Chris's grafts. The Maxidex has been reduced. We travelled back to Abbey Wood at an unimpressive 10 miles an hour I would estimate. So that was another lovely day. It was a real loss though not to see David, however he did not have to endure the interminable travel, the appointment wait and the cold of the restaurant.
