It's end of term again - that scholastic measure of our lives I escaped five years ago. But on a perfect sunny afternoon in Sowerby Bridge, Tuel Lane mixed infants compete in the annual sports day.
There's a public recreation ground hard-by the school and year 2 prepare for their future as juniors by competing in the skills of running, egg and spoon, three legged, skipping and sack races. From time-out-of-mind this has been the tradition and it is obligatory for responsible and appropriate adults to praise, applaud and mock their children.
Esmé was second in the first heat of straight running and so was in the finals.
She did complete the egg and spoon without dropping anything and is clearly way ahead of her best friend on our left.
Esmé demonstrates that boundless enthusiasm and good humour are more important than winning as Joseph romps home in the skipping race.
And there's still no shortage of those characteristics in the sack race.
Esmé was in two three-legged races and it was just a laugh really. Some kids got the hang of it right away and raced home, others just never did.
And too soon it was all over, but exhausted and happy.
