Last Saturday was open day at CMBC's Lock Hill Mills Depot in Sowerby Bridge. It is there that all the park and street organic waste is composted, turned, crushed and screened over long months before it becomes 'Black Gold' - a quality neutral compost for soil conditioning. This was a chance for a PR exercise by Mark Dempsey (above far right) the boss and his lads to show what they do and it's significance to community growers in Calderdale. Either it is delivered in 10-20 tonne loads to community growing sites, or we the community growers collect large loads of it directly. That's one reason why Nick has traded in his old LDV Pilot for a tipper truck with a tail lift. He can collect and deliver reasonable loads directly. There's still the issue of supplying your ordinary grower with some of this compost.
the machinery is impressively huge, noisy and Italian - it's adapted from another purpose.
